Alliance unfolds in Tamil Nadu

Author: Corporate Cat | Files under Politics

The high drama of alliance formation has come to a final shape today with PMK announcing its desire to join AIADMK front and Vijaykanth’s decision to go it alone in the battle for power to Delhi.

During the last Parliamentary election DMK formed a very strong front with Congress, MDMK, PMK and  Communists and swept the polls. For  the assembly elections in 2006 DMK led alliance continued but without MDMK who switched over to AIADMK front. In the assembly elections DMK could not sweep the polls inspite of strong alliance. Somehow they could get majority as a front. As an individual party DMK could not get majority seats. This was a major shift in the election trend in Tamil Nadu.  In the past elections the party which wins the elections almost swept the polls.

The change in the trend was mainly attributed to splitting of votes by the newly formed DMDK of Vijaykanth. This party contested the polls individually without forming alliance. People supported this party by casting more than 8% votes on its debut. This percentage of votes changed the fate of the result in as many as 70 constituencies.

After the announcement of 2009 Parliamentary elections there was high drama in Tamil Nadu as to the probable alliances. There were many permutations and combinations going round. DMK and ADMK vied with one another in roping PMK and DMDK. Neither Ramadoss nor Vijaykanth could take a decision.

As far as Ramadass is concerned he could not judge the probable result of the ensuing election as he used to do. This is mainly due to Vijaykanth factor as DMDK is capable of making all calculations topsy turvy. By way of abundant caution Ramadoss chose to leave the matter to the party’s general council.  When put to vote as many as 2453 members voted for alliance with AIADMK and 117 for alliance with DMK front. This was accepted by PMK supremo Ramados. There was a plan to meet Jayalalitha  immediately after the general council meeting. But according to reports such meeting will take place only after PMK central ministers resign their post before meeting Jayalalitha.

With MDMK, Communists and PMK in its fold AIDMK front is becoming stronger day by day.

Vijaykanth has decided to go it alone as he did in Assembly elections. Nearly two and half years have passed since DMDK was polled more than 8% votes. After this DMDK has contested by-elections and Panchayat elections alone. This has increased its popularity. Vijaykanth is consistent in telling the people that neither DMK nor AIADMK have done anything concrete to the public during the past 40 years. With Assembly elections due in 2011 going it alone in Parliamentary elections may lay a very strong foundation for DMDK for the next asssembly elections. By facing Lok Sabha elections alone there is no doubt DMDK will become stronger than ever before.

But it would have been better if Vijaykanth ropes in Congress and other non DMK / AIADMK parties to its fold even for this election.  Eventhough it is too late now,  anything is possible in politics.  Probably this will pave way for a possible coalition in Tamil Nadu with Congress in 2011 to give an alternative government which is without DMK and AIADMK.

DMK and Congress seems to be the worst sufferers due to this realignment of political forces in Tamil Nadu. By not withdrawing the support to the Central Government, by not surrendering the ministerial posts at the Centre and by realigning with Congress for this Parliamentary elections DMK has proved that all its so called voices against Srilankan Tamils is only to hoodwink the Tamil Population and has clearly established their unquenchable thirst for power.

With BJP and BSP also in the race there is going to be multicornered contest in Tamil Nadu and Pondichery for the 40 Lok Sabha seats.
