Announcements by colleges prohibiting ragging is a routine annual exercise. They beautifully document it by getting declaration from the students that they will not engage in ragging.
But the crime continues with immunity. We have seen several deaths due to ragging. But many cases of ragging has gone unnoticed or unreported. Several students either dropped out of the colleges or have suffered mentally severely due to ragging.
It is shocking to know that a nineteen year old student of P.S.G. College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore was severely injured with retina damages and according to doctors he may lose his vision in about 6 years. What a shocking incident !.
Incidents of this nature, which happen quite frequently, clearly shows the ineffectiveness of law relating to ragging or the ineffectiveness of its implementation.
Infighting in colleges have become the order of the day. Everyone witnessed the attrocity at Law College, Chennai a few months back.
Instead of allowing books and notebooks into the college and hostel now we are witnessing entry of arsenals and ammunitions in to the campus. This is not a good sign for the future generation of India.
It is high time education department takes stringent steps to totally curtail this barbaric activity call ’ Ragging’. It is a pity that nowadays colleges are busy filling up their coffers than disciplining the students. Education has become a business now.
Many students or their parents afraid to complain against this evil. A suitable system shall be installed in all colleges in such a way that even an anonymous letter is given serious follow up and remedial steps.
The College administration shall be made solely responsible for this type of incidents. The students involved in the attack shall be dismissed forthwith and the injured student shall be suitably compensated by the College administration.
Under no circumstance we should allow rowdies to enter the temples of learning under the guise of education.

It seems that this is not a case of ragging but a group fight. The so-called “victim” of ragging was as much responsible for the incident. A cross section of people hold this view, so it needs to be taken seriously. You cannot simply pronounce somebody guilty, just because an allegation of ragging is made. That is like a kangaroo court!

You name it ragging or group fight or anything else. The only thing for which we should aspire to do is to prevent rowdism within college premises and hostels.

I fully agree.
