Dont Demolish Vivekananda House …

Author: Corporate Cat | Files under Condemn

Swamy Vivekananda is a symbol of Indian Culture and a gift to  mankind. His inspiring talks with full of punch is world renowned and is a great motivating factor for millions of youngsters. His birth day ie 12th of January is celebrated as World Youth Day. Such a great scholar, after delivering his historic Chicago address,  visited Chennai and stayed in a building from 5/2/1897 to 15/2/1897 and delivered series of lectures. Sri
C.Rajagopalachari ( popularly known as Rajaji) had the fortune of attending his lectures and  interacting with Swamy.  This building became a place of historic importance ( like Vivekananda Rock where Swamy Vivekananda sat and  meditated for a few days). Later it was named as Vivekanandar Illam. This building houses rare photgraphs of Swamy Vivekananda and is being maintained as a permanent photo exhibition. This attracts lot of followers from all parts of the country and even from abroad. This building is maintained by Sri Ramakrishna Mission. Dinamalar dt. 23.4.08 carries a distressing news that the government of Tamil Nadu wants to demolish this building and construct a new building for Tamil Development. While there cannot be a second opinion that Tamil Language should be developed at all cost, the plan to demolish the Heritage Building where Swamy Vivekananda stayed for more than a week is beyond all reasonableness and fairness.  It is shocking to know from the newspaper that the hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has put a condition to meet the Ramakrishna Mission Authorities that they  should  vacate the building  before meeting him. The newspaper report says that the lease period ends only in 2010.  Places of this nature, which speaks volumes about our culture,   are to be maintained by the  government as heritage site. Instead of doing this what made the government to even think of demolishing this building is perplexing. Let us hope that good sense prevails in the mind of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
