Hooch tragedy

Author: Corporate Cat | Files under Prohibition

From the time immemorial we are regularly reading news about illicit liquor and the consequence of its consumption. Knowing fully that drinking is injurious to health,  liquor business is being done by none other than governments. Mere printing of the slogan  against drinking does not prevent hooch tragedies.  Government is unwilling to bring prohibition citing reason that if prohibition is implemented there will be more death due to consumption of illicit liquor. This is totally unacceptable. This only reveals government’s inability to control illicit liquor.  Government’s duty is only to govern and to provide infrastructure. But for reasons best known to them government is doing business which is none of their business. Merely because there  are road accidents government cannot run all vehicles citing reason that accidents are happening due to private vehicles.  Corruption which is deep rooted in our country helps illicit liquor barons . Few arrest dramas are performed, compensation is paid to the families of victims and we forget everything after a few days.  Every life is important. There is no second opinion about that. But at the same time public money should be spent for educating the public rather than paying compensation to the family for the mistake committed by its member. Compensation and freebies have become order of the day. Even at the cost of revenue,  government should take serious steps to bring prohibition and take sincere steps to educate the public on the evils of drinking. There is no point in declaring holiday and celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday without doing this.  Will they do it?
