For the past few days lot of debate is going on regarding disclosure of assets by the persons who are taking offices as judges. There cannot and should not be any doubt as to the accountability of any public servant. Judges are no exception. There have been many cases where, at the request of the parties to the dispute,  the Courts have transferred the cases to different States. Does this mean that the judges of smaller courts are corrupt? Does this mean that the higher courts are convinced that the judges are biased? Does this mean that the higher court has no belief in these judges? Does this mean that the higher Courts could not instil confidence in the minds of the litigants? If the answer is yes then  the next step is to remove them from that post instead of transferring cases to another court, another State etc. If the answer is no then these cases ought not to have been transferred to other States. We have seen many political leaders commenting on judges and they have gone on record by saying they know how the judgement was OBTAINED!  All these goes to show that the judges are under the cloud. They need to be transparent. Public expect them to be transparent. They are morally responsible and liable to disclose their asset and networth. The writer is of the view that not only judges but all those persons who come under the definition of public servant must disclose their balance sheets EVERY YEAR. Before taking oath for the office they must disclose their previous TEN YEAR  balance sheet. Their Income tax return and wealth tax return must be made available in public domain. With these data one can easily have a close watch over the asset growth of these public servants. This condition shall be made applicable to their spouse(s!), sons and daughters. The person who is willing to fulfil the condition alone shall be eligible for these posts. When there is nothing to hide nobody need to worry and hesitate to show their personal belongings. If you ask thieves to establish a police station will they do it ? If only we, the public, give weightage to honesty and cleanliness in public life we can have good samaritans as public servants. We should firmly believe that it is POSSIBLE to bring good persons to public office. Mere thinking is not sufficient. We should recognise them, make them to contest in elections. They may lose initially. When we the public are determined to vote only for such persons then result will follow and we can have our dream leaders. Jai hind.
