Srilankan Tamil issue is rocking not only Tamil Nadu but also Delhi by means of threats by various political parties supporting the Congress led government at the Centre. It has been proved beyond doubt that Indian politicians can forgo any principle for the sake of staying in power. DMK party’s ultimatum to the centre (!) and withdrawal drama by their MPs, human chain, strikes were also held only to hoodwink the public, who in fact are not at all bothered about Srilankan problem as their problems here are many. Each and every party vied with one another for the simple thinking that if they did not support Srilankan Tamils (read LTTE) they may lose the vote bank ( may be also due to the fear that LTTE may target them if they do not support them).
DMK demanded that Pranab should visit Srilanka and solve the issue. Congress in fact yielded to DMKs request and sent Pranab Mukherjee to Sri lanka. What transpired between him and Srilankan government is anybody’s guess. But Karunanidhi was satisfied with the trip. He knows pretty well that Pranab’s trip was only a face saving measure for him.
Even seasoned politician Karunanidhi did not understand the elementary principle that India cannot poke its nose in the internal affair of a neighbouring country. Besides this it has been universally accepted that it is only LTTE which is using Tamilians as shield. LTTE has to such an extent of using ladies as human bombs which again has resulted in civilian deaths.
In spite of the above not only Karunanidhi but other politicians like PMK, MDMK, DK and even Communists followed suit for the simple fear that if they do not raise voice for Srilankan Tamils they may lose the vote bank in the ensuing parliamentary elections.
The only leader who understood the ground realities and openly issued statements against any interference is the ADMK supremo Jayalalithaa. Another person who is bold enough to reiterate this is Dr.Subramaniaswamy.
Now the acting PM Pranab Mukerjee has openly stated in the Parliament that India cannot interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka and cannot order them to stop their war against LTTE. He has further stated that LTTE is a known terrorist organisation.
One should appreciate Pranab for making the above statement which shows his political and dipolomatic maturity.
So far there is no concrete response for this from Congress’ coalition partner DMK. With Lok Sabha elections round the corner it will be interesting to see how DMK reacts to Pranab’s pronouncement. Will it break its alliance with Congress for the sake of Sri Lankan Tamils or Will it sail with Congress for the sake of retaining its power at Delhi?
Let us wait and see the drama when it unfolds.
