Curtain is down. MPs will enjoy deepavali with peace. They need not resign their MP post. What a drama this is ! Age factor is making Karunanidhi to act childishly. Without any thought he announced that if Srilankan Tamil problems are not solved within 15 days all Tamil Nadu MPs will resign and even obtained resignation letters from them. He wanted to repeat his resignation drama once again as he did just before the last parliament elections. At that time he was not in power. No stake whatsoever in Tamil Nadu government. He was bold enough to make such an announcement since the life of the present parliament will end in another six months. But things are different now. He is ruling Tamil Nadu State with Congress support.
He made this announcement in a hurry without considering the after effects if there is any problem to Congress government at the Centre. Moreover Tamil Nadu political scenario is in a fluid state. Nobody knows at this stage who is going to allign with whom for the Parliament elections which is hardly a few months away. Hardly a day to go for the deadline, somehow Congress provided Karunanidhi a face saving graceful exit from this drama by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi talking to him over phone and by sending Pranab Mukherjee to meet him. Congress being a party of very long standing knows the trick of the trade and has handled the issue nicely.
Now Karunanidhi has announced that Srilankan issue being 40 years old cannot be solved within short time. Was he not aware of this when he gave 15 days time to the Central Government? After giving the ultimatum only he seems to have realised that his ministry in Tamil Nadu will be out in no time if Congress withdraws its support. Past history will reveal that Congress has an excellent precedence of toppling State governments for the sake of its Central Power. One should praise Karunanidhi for understanding realities of the situation and correcting himself quickly. That is why he is surviving in Politics.
What exactly Karunanidhi has achieved by
(1) asking his partymen to give telegrams to the prime minister on Sri lankan issue.
(2) By conducting human chain in Chennai which affected the traffic and normal life and public were put to undue hardship.
(3) By playing the drama of resignation.
(4) By raking up the Srilankan Tamils issue which made many political parties vie with one another to show to the public that they are with Srilankan Tamils which only resulted in separatist remarks and talks followed by arrests and consequent protests and loss to public property.
One question to the citizens of Tamil Nadu. Dear brothers and sisters in Tamil Nadu do you remember that there is severe power cut in Tamil Nadu, many industries are suffering because of that, several workers are losing their jobs ?. If you don’t remember one must thank Karunanidhi for diverting your attention by raking up Srilankan Tamils issue. Happy deepavali to one and all. Jai Hind
