Several articles have appeared in the column “traffic sense” for the past few days. A few suggestions for the traffic department have also been given. This article is one more on the same lines. But for a change, the blame is purely on the pedestrians. They need to be educated on how to cross a road full of traffic. Government is doing its duty very well on this by providing zebra crossings, pelican crossing, signals, subways, overbridges etc at places where the traffic is heavy. But scant respect is given for this by the pedestrians. One point which attracted the attention is the behaviour of the pedestrian while crossing the road. In India we are following ‘keep left’ policy. Therefore commonsense demands that we have to initially see the right for possible vehicles coming from our right and after crossing nearly half of the road we have to see the left for possible vehicles coming from our left. This basic principle is not followed by many resulting in accidents. It is high time the traffic department takes steps to educate the pedestrians on the right way crossing a road.
