It all started when Subramania Swamy came to Madras High court on 17th February, 2009 to implead himself in a case pertaining to taking over the management of Chidambaram Temple by the government of Tamil Nadu. As per a leading newspaper when Swamy was inside the court in connection with the case a set of lawyers barged inside the court and shouted slogans praising LTTE and against Subramaniaswamy. Rotton eggs were thrown on Swamy. All these things happened in front of division bench justices P.K.Misra and K.Chandru. It appears that these lawyers also assaulted police constables standing behind Swamy. Anti brahmin slogans were also raised as Swamy belonged to that community. Despite the warnings by the judges this attrocity continued for about 15 minutes, as per the news item. The case was then reposted to 19th February, 2009. Swamy requested the judges to record the incident. Later Swamy told that he is taking up the matter to the Supreme Court.
On 19th February, 09 police tried to arrest the lawyers involved in the assault on Swamy and a few policemen on 17th February. This resulted in battle between advocates and pollicemen. Both police and advocates barged inside the court and there were severe damages to the Court. Both sides threw stones against each other. A police station was burnt by the lawyers. A judge who came out to see the scene was injured as a stone thrown hit him on his head resulting in bleeding injury. Newspaper report shows policemen damaging cars and advocates throwing stones.
Does this augur well for Justice? Certainly not. It is the duty of Policemen and Lawyers to abide by law. They are here to protect the law. It is a sad day as the two eyes of law battled with each other before the judges that too inside the Court.
The chain of events shows that it is all started by Lawyers when they first started their operations inside the Court by throwing eggs and assaulting policemen. Whoever does a wrong thing it is the duty of police to arrest and enquire. While performing this duty on 19th they have been beaten again. It seems the police force was not powerful enough to put down this agitation. Whether it is a complete breakdown of law and order is a question to be answered by the Supreme Court with whom the case is pending.
It is a sorrowful scene to see policemen damaging the cars parked there. Instead of safeguarding the public property, they themselves damaged the property.
There seems to be flaw by both the parties, the Police and the Advocates, the two saviours of Law.
It is high time that Tamil Nadu Government wakes up and put everything in order by taking severe punitive action against the perpetrators of this hooliganism, whoever it may be. The policemen who damaged the vehicles and other properties inside the Court premises shall be dismissed forthwith (photographs of this incident is available in leading newspapers). Similarly advocates who resorted to stone / egg throwing shall be stripped off their certificate of practice.
When government itself sells arrack, the law and order will be like this only in that land.
Our only option is to pray the Almighty for peace and a strong mind to digest these attrocities.
Jai hind
