At last the left has withdrawn its support to UPA government citing nuclear deal and petrol price hike as reasons. When a friend becomes a foe it is natural that a foe can also become a friend (for power). This is what has happened. Samajwadi Party and a few others have expressed their support to UPA government. The trial of strength is scheduled for July, 22nd.
This is the time for horse trading as Independents are in very great demand. Delhi is agog with activity of political arithmetic. When dependents withdraw their support it is the turn of Independents. There have been cases where the government fell for want of one vote. Till the magic figure of 272 is ensured the trading will go on and frequent visit to stable is most essential for stability.
What happens if the government fails to win the vote of confidence? The country has to face elections which brings all public related activities to a grinding halt under the guise of election code and ethics. Imagine the loss due this status of inertia for nearly 40 days. Something shall be done to overcome this. There shall not be any stoppage of work even after election is announced.
The concept of Proportionate Government shall be thought about. In this type of government there will be proportionate representation from all the parties with PM from the party getting maximum MPs. Something of this sort shall be thought about. Of course we can have proper checks and other preventive mechanisms to overcome misuse, if any. If implemented there need not be any worry about toppling, midterm elections etc. One contests in election only to serve people. Party is not the criteria. Hence there cannot be any grudge for this type of government. Under this type of elections parties shall not be permitted to form an alliance. They shall contest only based on their own strength. No horse trading. No stoppage of activity. Imagine how many hundreds of crores of money and time can be saved due to this.
Will the political and constitutional gurus think about this? Let us hope.
