Nearly 19 years back there was a small news item in “The Hindu” with caption “Wonderboy to play in chepauk”. At that time nobody knows that this young boy is going to create ripples in International Cricket. That was the time when the little master Sunil Gavaskar was ruling the cricketing world by his centuries. The wonderboy was already holding the world record for highest partnership in first class cricket. The boy’s age was just 16. He made his debut in Test cricket in the same year. From then onwards young Sachin Tendulkar never turned back.
Record after record in international cricket fell like pack of cards after the advent of Sachin in Test Cricket arena. He bypassed Don Bradman’s record number of centuries with ease and went past the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s world record of maximum number of centuries. This earned him a nickname ‘ Tondulkar’ as he is very fond of scoring centuries and frequent intervals. He now holds the world record of maximum number of Test centuries (39). As he is holding the world records for maximum runs in both test and one day cricket he can be called Twindulkar.
Perfect in technique, he was very often compared to the great Don Bradman. Tendulkar’s respect and love towards Don made him to make a personal visit to Australia to spend time with the alltime great. Don gracefully acknowleged Sachin as the world’s best batsman.
On the field he always kept his tempers cool even at time when the entire stadium is on fire. He commanded highest respect from the crowd and there were occasions when Tendulkar was asked to appear before the crowd to calm down them when they were in rage.
He is a complete picture of concentration on the field. Who will forget the last over bowled by him in the final one dayer against South Africa.
Tendulkar is already holding world record as the maximum run getter in one day internationals. Now he has surpassed West Indian star Brian Lara’s record of 11,953 runs, thereby becoming the world record holder for scoring maximum Test runs. He has proceeded to cross the magical 12,000 test runs.
His stroke play is a real treat to watch, power and technique blended together with his wrist playing the music in sending the ball towards the boundary with scintillating speed. Thing of beauty is joy for ever. Let us hope Sachin will reach further height so that his records stand for ever.
